Initially, the caps are bell-shaped, but as they mature, they expand to become plano-convex with an umbo. The surface of the cap is dark violet-brown in color and may stain blue-green to black when bruised.

The gills of Puerto Rican mushroom start off cream-colored when young and turn violet-brown or chocolate brown as they age. The spore print of these mushrooms is dark violet-brown. The stem is 3 to 8 cm long, 1 to 2 mm thick, and has a central, equal shape with a subbulbous base. To encourage the growth of the mycelium, place the bag with the mycelium box in a warm spot with a temperature of around 23-26 degrees Celsius. Avoid direct sunlight, as it can be harmful to the growing process. After three days, cut two holes on each side of the bag, roughly the size of a euro coin. This will allow for proper air circulation.

Step 4: Monitoring Growth and Harvesting

After 6 to 10 days, you will notice buds forming on the surface of the mycelium box. These buds will eventually develop into full-grown mushrooms. During this period, it is important to keep the surface moist by lightly spraying water on the buds every other day. Once the mushrooms reach their maximum size but before the caps fully open, they are ready to be harvested.

To harvest the mushrooms, ensure you have clean hands or wear sterile rubber gloves. Hold the mushroom stem with two fingers and gently twist it until it detaches from the surface. Be careful not to cause excessive damage to the mycelium box. It is recommended to harvest all the mushrooms in one flush to avoid contamination and promote the growth of the second flush.
